  1. Malaria is an infectious parasitic disease of 
  2. the tropics transmitted by mosquitoes, marked 
  3. by periodic fever and an enlarged spleen. 
  4. When a female mosquito of the Anopheles genus 
  5. bites a human who has malaria, it takes in 
  6. with the human blood one of four malaria 
  7. protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. This 
  8. matures within the insect and is then 
  9. transferred when the mosquito bites a new 
  10. victim. Malaria affects some 267 million 
  11. people in 103 countries, claiming more than a 
  12. million lives a year.
